Excel SUMIF: Sum Sales by Region (with Practice)

Quick answer

Use =SUMIF(A2:A7,"East",C2:C7) to add East region sales, for a total of $400.

Formula syntax

The syntax is =SUMIF(range, criteria, sum_range). Each part tells Excel what to check and what to return.

range
The cells Excel checks for a match, such as the Region values in A2:A7.
criteria
The condition to match, such as the text "East".
sum_range
The numbers to add when the matching row is found, such as C2:C7.

Worked example

This example adds sales only for rows where the Region is East.

Sales by region
RegionRepSales ($)
EastMaya120
WestLuis85
EastPriya150
NorthJordan90
EastAlex130
SouthRiley75

Formula: =SUMIF(A2:A7,"East",C2:C7)

Result: The East sales are 120 + 150 + 130, for a total of $400.

How to type it in Excel

  1. Enter the headings "Region", "Rep", and "Sales ($)" in A1:C1, then enter the six rows shown above in A2:C7.
  2. Select an empty cell for the total, such as E2.
  3. Type =SUMIF(A2:A7,"East",C2:C7).
  4. Press Enter. Excel adds the sales from the matching East rows and returns 400.

Common mistakes

  • For text criteria, include double quotes. Use "East", not East.
  • Keep range and sum_range the same size and aligned to the same rows.
  • Check for extra spaces in source cells. "East " may not match "East".
  • Text matching is not case-sensitive. Use * for any number of characters or ? for one character, such as "East*".

Frequently asked questions

When should I use SUMIF?

Use SUMIF when one condition determines which numbers to add, such as adding sales from one region.

Do text criteria need quotation marks?

Yes. Put text such as East in double quotes, as in "East".

Is SUMIF case-sensitive?

No. SUMIF text matching ignores case. Use wildcards when you want to match part of a value.
